Types Of Chemicals Peels

Light Chemical Peels

If you have uneven pigment, dryness, acne or fine wrinkling, a Light Chemical Peel might be the right choice. This peel removes just the outer layer of skin (epidermis) in a light exfoliation and results in a healthier glow. Light Chemical Peels use a combination of alphahydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid and maleic acid. All of these chemicals are the mildest choices. You can repeat these treatments weekly for up to 6 weeks to achieve your desired results. Light Chemical Peels may be repeated monthly to maintain your vibrant new look.

Medium Chemical Peels

Acne scars, deeper wrinkles and uneven skin color can all be treated with a Medium Chemical Peel. The chemicals used for this type of peel remove skin cells from both the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and the upper part of your middle layer of skin (dermis). Medium Chemical Peels use trichloroacetic acid, sometimes used in combination with glycolic acid, to make your skin will be noticeably smoother and fresh-looking. You may repeat a Medium Chemical Peel every 6 to 12 months to maintain your glowing new skin.

Deep Chemical Peels (only provided at our affiliate Hedden & Gunn Plastic Surgery)

If you have deeper facial wrinkles, skin that's damaged by the sun, scars, areas that appear blotchy or even pre-cancerous growths, a Deep Chemical Peel might be the right choice for you. Your physician will use the strongest chemical called phenol to penetrate down to the lower dermal layer of your skin. For this type of peel, you may need a local anesthetic and a sedative to manage any discomfort.
A Deep Chemical Peel usually involves some sort of pretreatment for up to 8 weeks to prepare your skin for the peel and speed the healing process. Pretreatment may include the use of Retin A, a prescription medication derived from vitamin A. Retin A works to thin out the skin's surface layer, allowing the chemical solution to penetrate more evenly and deeply. If you can't tolerate Retin A as a pre-treatment, you may be prescribed a different medication. Deep chemical facial peels will result in peeling, redness and discomfort for several days. Your doctor will provide painkillers to keep you comfortable. Although the swelling is likely to disappear in about 2 weeks, your skin may be red for up to 3 months. One treatment with a Deep Chemical Peel produces long-lasting and dramatic results which can last up to 10 years.

VI Peel Frequently Asked Questions

Who Can Benefit From A Chemical Peel?

Anyone who wants younger, healthier skin will benefit from the peel. Chemical peels will: Improve the tone, texture and clarity of the skin. Reduce or eliminate age spots, freckles and hyper-pigmentation, including melasma. Soften lines and wrinkles. Stimulate the production of collagen and elastin for firmer skin. Clear acne skin conditions.

Is It Painful?

Chemical peels are almost painless and have very few complications and hazards, yet produce dramatic visible results in just days with little downtime. You will feel a slight stinging sensation for a few seconds which subsides completely almost immediately. The peel is applied topically, numbing of the skin takes place after the first pass. Some patients may feel more comfortable using a fan or cold air breeze.

Is There Any Downtime After A Peel?

Normal activities can be resumed immediately after the peel. It takes about 4 days after you finish peeling for the skin to return to its normal PH and to see the final effects. The skin will look luminous and glowing. Hyper-pigmentation will be improved or gone, depending on the amount of damage. Tone and texture will be improved with an overall more youthful appearance.

Will A Chemical Peel Actually Cause My Skin To Peel?

The skin peeling associated with the chemical peels are a light, fluffy peel that will start on day 3 and generally be finished by the end of day 4. The peeling is easily hidden by moisturizer. In some cases, the peel is virtually invisible. The peel can be modulated to produce a deeper, more aggressive peel, if necessary, depending on your skin condition.
The skin will look slightly tan, yellow or red immediately after the peel. On days 1 and 2 the skin will feel slightly tighter, with no visible signs of having had a peel. Any pigmented areas might appear slightly darker. On approximately day 3, you will begin to peel. The first signs of peeling usually begin around the mouth area and continue for a day or two. With the use of a moisturizer, you may go about your usual daily routine. By day 6 or day 7 you will be done peeling and the results are dramatic! If a more aggressive peel was performed, a secondary peel might occur around day seven.

What Kind Of Maintenance Will My Skin Need?

Like everything else, skin needs maintenance. The chemical peels results will last as long as skin care is maintained, sun exposure is moderate and preventive aging with the peel is performed three or four times per year. In between treatments, use an aesthetician recommend skin care system for optimal results. The peel may be repeated as often as every two weeks, if necessary, for damaged skin. Spa Greystone's skincare professionals will evaluate your skin, as well as your goals and expectations, and make an appropriate recommendation for ongoing skin care.

Can Darker Skin Types Be Treated?

The many innovations that go into creating chemical peels now combine to enable the entire continuum of skin types to enjoy the benefits of the peel. For the first time, African-American and darker skin types such as some Asian and Latin skins can experience anti-aging and restorative skin care previously unavailable.
